Fettercairn Community Allotment

Managed by: Transition Mearns (TraM)

Project Description

Transition Mearns is part of the Transition Network; they are a passionate and expanding group of individuals concerned about the impacts of society’s actions and looming results of climate change and peak oil.  They aim to rebuild resilience of the Mearns community with exciting local projects to make a positive difference to the world and our quality of life.  They have previously run projects involving reusing & recycling, promoting energy awareness and carbon monitoring and are now focusing on sustainability.

The project will deliver an allotment facility for members of the community.  It will bring wider opportunities for local groups and schools to get actively involved in growing their own produce.  The allotment will also bring a social aspect to the community as an area where people can meet and spend time.  The group aim to establish a large main vegetable bed by edging off with timber and stakes.  They aim to develop an eco-friendly method of watering through the installation of a hand watering pump.

To promote the site and achieve the overarching aims of the group they will hold public open days to promote the following: Grow edible fruit & vegetables, Involve & engage with members of the community, educate each other on growing for a more sustainable future and provide an enjoyable, functioning community space for all that are interested.
